Between You and Me

Between You and Me imagines a ‘post apocalyptic parlour’ complete with twinned mirrors, hammock and day bed as well as a series of ornate garments, all made from collected hard rubbish. Initially installed in a gallery where entry was limited to two people arriving by different doors I asked viewers to consider the question: “What if we were the last people left?” and to negotiate with each other when they were ready to leave and let the next pair of viewers in.  Found carpet, furniture and curtains in various states of decay were patchworked into new opulent forms, each object and surface bears the malodorous markings and visible damage of its past however finds a new currency within its novel, interactive environment of intimacy, decadence and fantasy, playfully subverting the current vocabulary of fashion and interior design. Highlighting the transience of beauty and ‘taste’ the bunker images softer more ornate aesthetics than are usual in the post-apocalypse genre, borne from a collapsed society where throw-away objects that were once mass produced become precious keepsakes, and survivors have nothing but time to hand-make while waiting for the end.
