Mirror Worlds shop
MirrorWorlds Shop is an enthusiastic capitalist gesture, to explore the commercial and creative exchanges at the centre of my research. I embedded myself as a performer in the work, where I could conduct the sales and guide visitors/viewers in how to engage with the works. The shop’s product range included a digital copy of images and video connected with the project, (which has now been absorbed into this website); ViewMaster reels identical to those within the Cabinets of Wonder installation; a collection of decorative anaglyphic glasses and cardboard stereo viewers, and a collection of limited edition smartphone housings, which convert a smartphone into a virtual reality headset (with the addition of free downloadable software sourced online). This is a collection of costumes/housings that can be expanded indefinitely as I re-interpret trends and imagery in a way that attempts to mimic the expansive, generative and creative outputs seen across vernacular art practices, piracy modalities and digital culture. The conceit of a real/unreal shop is also intended as both a humorous and sincere copy of a gallery gift shop. It acknowledges the place of art within the global economic system of capitalism, and my role in this system as an art maker. It toggles the artistic value or appeal of the art objects to the proven and undeniable appeal of our personal digital devices and uses novelty and humour to draw together in one place the various aspects of this project. This shop distributes the work beyond the gallery, encouraging the viewer to keep consuming the worlds-made, bringing them into their personal spaces, digitally and physically.
